Show Record would change, and at times we would have to go down and around 2775 the bar and come into camp from the lower side; at other times the channel would be free so that we could enter above and came directly into camp. I couldn't say how far the channel itself would swing, but it seemed to be generally a progressive action; if it started to shift in one direction, it would continue that way. At other places on the Colorado River I observed a change in the condition of the channel only in the operation of boats; we couldn't always follow the same channel; the old channel would fail and a new one develop and we would have to shift our course. These changes were observable during the low water. This Colorado River survey to which I am now referring started July 30, 2776 1926, and I went out through Lockhart Basin about October 24. The sand bar condition below Lockhart concerning which I have testified occurred during the year 1927, and on that occasion I was there from the latter part of October until the early part of December. In 1926 we had a camp at various parts along the river; 2777 one at Island Mesa, approximately fifteen miles below Moab; one at Grand Landing, about twenty miles below Moab; and one at Lock-hart. At Island Mesa our supplies came to us principally by pack outfit, but part of them in a small boat. When at Grand Landing our supplies were brought down by the Moab Garage barge; when at Lockhart our supplies came principally by pack outfit, but a por-tion 2778 of them came on the big boat of the Moab Garage Company. In August, 1926, I rode on the large boat of the Moad Garage Company from the Moab dock to Grand Landing, when the boat was stuck the greater part of the day on a sand bar; they carried a cable ashore and pulled us off by means of a windlass; I would judge we were 2779 stuck eight or nine hours. In August, 1927, I went from Moab to Lockhart on the big barge and on that trip we were hung up for a short time at one place. When our party left Lockhart in 1926 we crossed the river a little below Lockhart and came up on the west |
