Show Record fourteen in our party and we were subdividing the unsurveyed 2726 lines between the San Juan River and the Arizona- Utah line. Our survey extended forty- two miles east and west and varied north and south from six to eighteen miles in extent. We commenced the 2727 survey on the range line between seventeen and eighteen and ran west to the west boundary of township eleven. That country was quite sandy with a great deal of surface rock, and aside from Navajo Indians the only people living there, so far as I know, 2728 or two below that family. The vegetation is sparse, black brush, some grass and sagebrush, juniper and pinon. During the period I was there I had occasion to go to the San Juan River and to the canyon at the mouth of Slick Horn Canyon on the north side, and at Clay Hill Crossing I was at the water's edge where the river opens out of the canyon. At intervals while I was there we ran 2729 meander lines. I was at the San Juan River in the winter of 1925, 1926. In 1925 we surveyed the Copper Canyon section, I should judge about six, maybe twelve milesalong the river up from Copper Canyon. It is hard to recall just what portion we surveyed in 1926, but we covered from approximately the mouth of 2730 Moonlight Canyon to below Piute Canyon. We attempted to use a boat in crossing some of our supplies, and I believe I myself crossed once or twice in the boat and at other times I crossed on horseback frequently. At times it would be a daily occurrence. 2731 This was in the early spring and winter months and we would be occupied in meandering the river from December to May. I have crossed the river above the mouth of Copper Canyon, at the mouth of Nokai Canyon, at the mouth of Piute Canyon, and at a point two or three miles above Piute. I can't say that I observed the exact depth of the river when I crossed at Copper Canyon on a 2732 horse and don't recall how far the water came up on my horse. At the mouth of Piute Canyon the water came up so you would have to hold you feet up out the stirrups to keep from getting them 359 |
