Show Removal - 598 Authorization for So. Ute Agent and two representative Indians to travel to Washington, D. C. to discuss removal. Jan. 21, 1886 Atkins, J. D. C, Commissioner of Indian Affairs Letter to C. F. Stollsteimer, So. Ute Agency Atkins asks the agent to select two of the most influential Indians of the Southern Ute Tribe and report with them to Washington, D. C. to discuss removal to Utah. 1889 Southern Ute Agreement Report of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs The commissioner clearly states his opposition to the ratification of the agreement made with the So. Ute Indians in the fall of 1888. He states the relocation is against the wishes of the So. Utes and would hamper the government's effort to civilize this tribe. Statutes at Large Oct. 26, 1889 Bartholomew, Charles, Indian Agent, So. Ute Agency Letter to Commissioner of Indian Affairs Bartholomew denies reports that Utes are killing game and cattle in the Blue Mountains. He says the false complaints are being made by cattlemen who are opposed to the removal of the Utes to a new reservation. Bartholomew requests that all complaints about the So. Utes be made first to the agency, rather than to the Indian Affairs department or state governors. Included with the letter is a copy of a S. L. Tribune article about the reported troubles in the Blue Mountains. NA, RG 75, BIA/ 31082 Sept. 2, 1890 Teller, H. M., U. S. Senate Letter to T. J. Morgan, Commissioner of Indian |
