Ute Agency Telegram to Commissioner of Indian Affairs Day reports interpreter has gone to Monticello, while he waits for Col. Lawton's party. Citizens in Moab have not heard of any trouble. NA/ RG 75 Dec. 13, 1894 Day, David F., Indian Agent, So. Ute Agency Telegram to Commissioner of Indian Affairs Col. Lawton and Agent Day arrived in Monticello and found Gov. West and his staff there. Utes found to be friendly. Ignacio refuses to believe orders about them returning has been issued. Col. Lawton will make report to General McCook. Lawton reports meeting with Indians shows them to be peaceful and intending to stay in the area, still refuse to believe orders to return to the reserve. Sending troops to remove the Indians will be costly and create suffering. NA/ RG 7 5 Dec. 13, 1894 Lawton, B. W., Lt. Col. Letter to Colonel Reports conditions around Monticello are different than he had expected. Indians are not as threatening nor do they wish to create trouble.
