Bowman Complains Utes who had trouble at the start of the month on the Mancos are camping on the Navajo reservation making everybody uneasy. FRCD/ RG 7 5 Dec. 16, 1886 Citizens of McElmo, Colorado Letter to Col. Swaine, Commanding Officer, Ft. Lewis The citizens complain of the many depredations committed by the Ute Indians. The white settlers fear for their lives and request aid from " our boys in blue with their gallant commanders." FRCD/ RG 75 Sept. 23, 1886 (?), Bishop of Bluff Ward Letter to A. J- Stollsteimer, Esq., So. Ute Agency The Bishop informs Stollsteimer that Mariano has been there and told the Indians they had no right to ask the whites to pay them for letting stock range anywhere in this region. FRCD/ RG 75 Dec. 19, 1886 Swaine, P. T., Commanding, Fort Lewis, Colorado Letter to Stollsteimer, Indian Agent, Ignacio, Colorado Col. Swaine asks for confirmation that Utes are encamped on McElmo Creek and intimidating the white settlers in the area. Swaine will send an officer to investigate after hearing back from Stollsteimer.
