Ute Agency Letter to Mrs. Virginia McClurg, Colorado Springs The Utes at Navajo Springs refuse to lease the land on which are found the Mesa Verde ruins. The agent asks Mrs. McClurg to help in persuading them to sign. July 15, 1901 Smith, Joseph 0., Agent, So. Ute Agency Letter to J. P. Anglim, Dist. Atty., Durango The agent sends this letter with two Indian boys, who reported an assault on an Indian by a white man at Bayfield. The boys seek aid in prosecuting the case. Fights are frequent because of the liquor dispensed at Bayfield. July 22, 1901 Smith, Joseph 0., Agent, So. Ute Agency Letter to Albert McClurg, Colorado Springs Smith responds to McClurg's request that some Utes be sent to him ( the purpose is not clear in the document). Smith comments that six Arapahoe Indians are visiting the agency. Nov. 26, 1901 Smith, Joseph O., Agent, So. Ute Agency Letter to Major Geo. W. Stouch, Darlington, Oklahoma Permission is granted to Mr. Seymour Price and his party to spend a few weeks at the reservation. There is nothing of interest on the reservation except the ruins of the cliff dwellers, " which are in a very rough mountainous country, thirty miles from a railroad." |
