McKean Responds to Brandon Report recommending development of livestock interests for the Ute Mountain jurisdiction. Suggests funds be used to develop water to facilitate livestock raising. Requests $ 1500 for developing springs on the reservation. Handwritten note regarding authority for funds. NA/ RG75/ 75948- 1922- Con Ute 910 Oct. 10, 1922 Meritt, E. B., Asst. Commissioner Letter to E. E. McKean Brandon reported that Mancos Farm should be used to grow feed crops for the tribe's sheep herd. Asks for recommendations to put farm into operation. Also, states that monthly allowances had been reduced to only the old, indigent, and disabled, and that the Indians are expected to provide for themselves. Rye had been planted but little rain had fallen. The Mancos River is often dry during the summer and irrigation is a tenuous proposition because dams to supply ditches could be wiped out by high waters. But plans for continuous experiments at the farms have been formulated. Also, the Ute Mountain Indians have been informed that their money is diminishing |
