NA/ RG 75/ 38246- 08 May 1, 1908 Chubbuck, Levi, Spec. Inspector Investigation at Monticello, Utah George A. Adams, chairman of Board of County Commissioners, assessed situation in San Juan, Ut. Conflicts with Utes over cattle grazing and ownership. White numbered 1000 and Utes 150. 50,000 acres in Montezuma canyon disputed as Indian settlements in summer deprived white settlers of winter grazing. NA/ RG 75/ 38246- 08 May 2, 1908 Wood, J. H.(?) Sheriff, San Juan County Testimony Utes assisted by Navajos in resisting arrest. Utes attitude toward arrest; one arrest viewed as offence to entire band. Utes " claim right to settle all disputes of their own." Wood associated Indians with white criminal elements and recommended Indians would be more " civilized" by farming than stock- raising.
