Ute Agency Letter to Commissioner of Indian Affairs Bartholomew denies reports that Utes are killing game and cattle in the Blue Mountains. He says the false complaints are being made by cattlemen who are opposed to the removal of the Utes to a new reservation. Bartholomew requests that all complaints about the So. Utes be made first to the agency, rather than to the Indian Affairs department or state governors. Included with the letter is a copy of a S. L. Tribune article about the reported troubles in the Blue Mountains. NA, RG 75, BIA/ 31082 Oct. 29, 1889 Bartholomew, Charles, Indian Agent, So. Ute Agency Letter to Commissioner of Indian Affairs The agent sends to the commissioner an article from the Durango Herald entitled " The Southern Utes not to Blame." Bands of Navajo and Ulains (?) are killing of game and " causing cattle in large numbers to leave the mountains." Copy of article is attached to letter. C Kumer requests that Hammond " pull some rope that will bring some relief to the settlers" in Bluff, Utah, who have had their stock stolen by renegade Indians who are acting as if the proposed reservation is theirs already.
