Peterson invites Senator Patterson to visit the Agency and witness the condition of the Utes. Travel directions from Denver to Mancos included Sept. 8, 1904 Peterson, W. M., Supt., Ft. Lewis School Letter to Major A. R. Paxton, Alcatraz Island, Calif. Peterson questions Paxton, former quartermaster of Ft. Lewis, about work on irrigation ditches at the fort. Peterson describes water scarcity at the school, and the need to establish water rights for the Utes. " The water was originally appropriated by the general government, and its use has been continuous." Peterson wants to know when the ditch was first taken out. He comments on health, crime ( a suicide was committed - the first known among Southern Utes), irrigation and water rights, stock, buildings, census, and the school. If the Thompson's Park Ditch diverts its fully amount, the river would be completely dry at Ft. Lewis, except during times of high flood. |
