Hoyt, Commissioner Chief Ignacio has demanded that no fences should be built upon agency grounds. Mar. 19, 1890 (?), Commissioner of Indian Affairs Directive Indians should be encouraged to adopt family names as they are allotted land. Indian names to be preserved if possible. Ute Agency Belh informs the agent of accusations made that agency employees have been gambling with the Indians. Bartholomew is to take actions to prevent the practice of gambling among agency personnel and So. Ute Indians. Nov. 24, 1890 Bartholomew, C. A., Agent, So. Ute Agency Letter to Commissioner of Indian Affairs The agent responds to the commissioner query about a reported exhibition of Indian dancing in Durango. Bartholomew writes that the Utes go to Durango to sell their produce and while there they were induced to display their dancing. The dances are not immoral or cruel, as suggested by the article.
