Shelton Reports investigation of murder and asks to be accompanied on visit to Utah. Dec. 5, 1904 Peterson, W. M., Supt., Ft. Lewis School Letter to Frank Mead, Gen. Supt, Indian Reservation, Phoenix, Arizona Peterson asks Mead to visit the So. Ute Reservation to witness severe water shortage that forces all but nine of 500 Utes off the land. Peterson comments ironically about the futility of monthly reports of Indian industrial conditions, without water supply provided in 1895 treaty. Also, Utes reportedly living near water sources were being driven off by whites claiming those areas for stock range. Jan. 21, 1905 Smith, Joseph O., Supt., Southern Ute Agency Letter to Commissioner of Indian Affairs Report on letter concerning Indians committing depredations on game and stock in San Juan County, Utah. Agent informs Commissioner that none of tribe is on hunting expedition. He believes Piutes living in the area may be the ones to blame. Awaits further instructions. Dickson, Supervisor in Charge, Southern Ute Indian School, Ignacio Commissioner has received Agent Smith's letter of January 21, 1905, and is instructed to take no further action in depredations alleged to have taken place in San Juan County, Utah. |
