This image, engraved by H[enri] Thiriat, was published in La Nature, no 671 (10 Apr 1886), as figure 3 (p. 296), to accompany the seventh installment of Albert Tissandier's "Lettres d'Amérique", with the caption "Intérieur d'une source ancienne d'eau bouillante dans Yellowstone-Park, aux États-Unis." http://cnum.cnam.fr/CGI/fpage.cgi?4KY28.26/300/100/432/0/0 The same image appears as figure 54 (p. 187), engraved by H[enri] Thiriat, in Albert Tissandier's book Six mois aux États-Unis : voyage d'un touriste dans l'Amérique du nord suivi d'une excursion à Panama (Paris : G. Masson, [1886]), with the caption "Intérieur d'une source tarie près Mammoth hot springs hotel, d'après nature". Associated text (p. 184): "Tout auprès de Mammoth hotel springs on peut descendre dans l'intérieur d'une de ces sources, tarie depuis longtemps. L'entrée est étroite d'abord, elle a 2 mètres environ de diamètre. A l'aide de deux échelles on arrive à une vingtaine de mètres de profondeur, au-dessus d'un orifice où l'on peut encore pénétrer en s'attachant à une corde. Arrivé à 50 mètres environ dans ces noirs abîmes, il faut s'arrêter. Les odeurs sulfureuses vous suffoquent. Mon guide m'a donné ces détails, car je n'y suis point descendu. L'intérieur de cette source est intéressant (fig. 54); on voit distinctement les couches de calcaires siliceux qui se sont superposées avec la suite des années; l'humidité et quelques mousses vertes qui les recouvrent détruisent peu à peu leur forme." |
