This image, engraved by AE Tilly, was published in La Nature, no 658 (9 Jan 1886), as figure 1 (p. 84), to accompany the third installment of Albert Tissandier's "Lettres d'Amérique", with the caption "Vue de Pittsburg. Côté du mont Washington. (D'après nature, par M. Albert Tissandier.)" http://cnum.cnam.fr/CGI/fpage.cgi?4KY28.26/88/100/432/0/0 The same image appears as figure 10 (p. 32), with no engraver's name, in Albert Tissandier's book Six mois aux États-Unis : voyage d'un touriste dans l'Amérique du nord suivi d'une excursion à Panama (Paris : G. Masson, [1886]), with the caption "Pittsburg, côté du mont Washington (d'après nature)". Associated text (p. [29]): "Me voici à Pittsburg, ville toujours enveloppée des fumées des usines dont elle est pleine, mais très pittoresquement située sur les rivières l'Alléghany et le Monongahéla qui forment à elles deux le superbe fleuve l'Ohio (fig. 10). Cette ville est sale, l'odeur constante des fumées y est désagréable, on n'en voit le côté pittoresque qu'au travers des vapeurs noires, et cependant on éprouve du plaisir à y rester quelques jours. C'est l'ardeur au travail qu'on admire en ces lieux, et qui vous laisse dans l'esprit des traces inoubliables." |
