Show Message from Senator Reed Smoot UNITED STATES SENATE COMMITTEE ON FINANCE December 2, 1924 1926 Utonian, University of Utah, Salt Lake City. Gentlemen: I was delighted to learn, through your letter of November 17, 1924, your intention of publishing an unusual yearbook or annual of the University's activities in commemoration of the thirtieth anniversary of Utah statehood. Many things have happened in the last thirty years that have brought Utah to the fore educationally, politically and financially, and no one will doubt the splendid part played in that advance by the University, in Utahs reaching her present enviable position in America's educational advancement and life. You will never know how proud I am when pointing out to leading men and women I am privileged to meet the wonderful and interesting history of the institution: what it has done by way of placing Utah near the top educationally, and its fearless, conscientious and up-standing young men and women graduates. Your publication ought to be the interpreter of student life; it ought to be the mirror held up to the student body, it ought to penetrate beneath the surface of things and see, know, and report them as they exist. I ask you, as well as every student of the institution to guard well the school's ideals; put every effort forth for greater advancement in the future, and bar from the school's portals evil thoughts and unbecoming actions; never forget to thank God that you are Americans; believe in America's traditions, her ideals and our form of Government. \ours sincerely, Page Thirty-seven |
