Section 7 of the Sioux act, approved March 2,1889 (25 Stats., $$a), provided as follows : That each member of the Santee Sioux tribo of Indians now occupying n reserva-tion in tho State of Nebraska not having already taken nllotments shall be entitled to allotrr~entsn pon said reserve in Nebrssks as follows: To eaoh head of a famil? one-quarter of a section; to each single parsonover eighteen yetbrs of age, oue-eighth of a, section; to eaoh orphan child, under eighteen years, one-eighth of s section; to eaoh other person under eighteen yoare of age now living, ona-sixteenth of a, section; with title thereto, in uocortlalloo ~ i t thhe provisions of axtiole s i s of the treaty conoloded April twenty-ninth, eighteen buudred and sixty-eight, and the agreement with said Santee Sioux :hpproved February twenty-eighth, eighteen hun-dred ant1 seventy-seveu, and rights under the same in all other raspeots oonform-ing to this act. An act of Congress approved January 19, 1891 (26 Stats., 720), con- Oains this provision : To enable the Seoretary of the Interior to purchase lands for such of the Santee Sioux Indians in Nebraska as have boenunable to take lands in severalty on their reservation in Nebraska by reason of the restoration of the unallottsd lanrls to the public domain, $32,000. The Indian appropriatio~l act of July 13,1892 (27 Stats., 145), con-tains a olause providing as follows: That the funds now in the Treasury belonging to the Santee Sioux Indiana in the State of Nebraska, and it Flandrenu, in tho State of South Dakota, resulting from tho sale of landsin Minnesota, and $32,000, heretofore appropriated to purohase lands for the Santee Sioux in Nebraska, who have not received allotments, may, in the discretion of the Secretary of the Interior, be paid in oash. September 26, 1892, the Secretary of the Interior authorized the pap ments in oash to the Sautee Sioux Indians of certain specified sums of money standing to their credit on the books of the Treasury, including the $32,000 appropriated by act of January 19,1891. April 21,1893, this office submitted to the Department a schedule of the names of the Santee Sioux Indians elltitled to share in the $32,000 referred to, with the amount to which each was entitled, with recommendation that pay-ment be made accordingly. The authority therefor was granted and the payment has been made. |
