Show 16 REPORT OF THE COMMISSIONER OF INDIAN AFFAIRR. among the Sioux to whose support the Government contributes, may be considered as at last meeting the requ~rementosf the Sioux treaties, which promised a school and teacher for every 30 children of school age. Nearly half of all the day schools in the Indian service are among the Sioux. The Government is now in a positiou to demand of these I n d i a ~a~ sfu lfillment of their part of the pledge. Whatever the limitations and disadvantages of day schools among Indians they have their ardent supporters and their unquestionable ' usefillness. They are stepping stones both to the boarding schools and the public schools, and can often be established where neither the one nor the other would be practicable. They are small feeders which smell the educational stream. A fern day schools have been discontinued. The following table shows the location and capacity of the various Government day schools in operation during the past year: TABLE 5.-Location a ~ cdap acity of Go o e r ~ a ~ adtat# sohools, .Tr~se$ 0,1 893.
