The S H E E P - D O G is, according to Buffon, the parent-stock of all tbe species of dogs. Fitzinger also describes it as one of his pure races. There are, however, as has been mentioned above, at least three varieties of the breed. Moreover, as ' Stonehenge' states that " a great proportion of those in actual use are crossed with the various sporting dogs such as the Setter, which is very common" (especially in the case of the Collie, which has been crossed with the Gordon Setter), " or the Pointer, or even the Hound," the varieties of this breed within certain limits may be almost unending.
