Show F. POTENTIAL STORAGE UNITS 1. Gray Canyon Early reconnaissance studies indicated that a multipurpose Gray Canyon storage unit could be economically developed for regulation of the Green River in east-central Utah. The principal purpose would be power production. Recent studies show that development cannot be justified at this time, largely because of excessive costs due to poor geologic conditions. Writing of the reconnaissance report is in the final stages and will be completed in fiscal year 1968. G. POTENTIAL PROJECTS In carrying out further investigations of projects under Federal Reclamation Laws in the Upper Colorado River Basin, the Secretary of the Interior is directed to give priority to completion of planning reports on 25 projects. Brief descriptions of these projects are to be found in the Commission's Eighth Annual Report. The Bureau of Reclamation, so far as limited funds and personnel will permit, is continuing its studies on these projects. Considerable progress in investigations has been accomplished during the past year. 1. CONGRESSIONAL AUTHORIZATION PENDING Feasibility reports on five participating irrigation projects namely, Animas-La Plata Project, Dallas Creek Project, Dolores Project, San Miguel Project, and West Divide Project, have been transmitted to the Congress. The Animas-La Plata Project is located in Colorado and New Mexico. The other four are situated in southwestern Colorado. These projects are included in H. R. 3300, a Bill to authorize the construction of a Colorado River Basin Project, upon which hearings were held during the First session of the 90th Congress by the House of Representatives Subcommittee on Irrigation and Reclamation during March, 1967. They are also included in S. 1004, a Bill to authorize the construction of a Central Arizona Project, which was approved by the U.S. Senate on August 7, 1967. Both Bills are now pending before the Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs of the House of Representatives. Further Congressional action is expected in 1968 during the second session of the 90th Congress. 130 |
