Show In December 1966 the Secretary announced his approval of the report recommending that construction proceed on the project under a plan designed to optimize the net benefits to the Indians from the water allotted to the project. Construction Activities The contract for construction of the Main Canal headworks and 2 miles of Tunnel No. 1 was essentially completed in July 1967. The contract for construction of 5.6 miles of Main Canal and Tunnel No. 2 is about 73 percent complete. A contract for construction of 2.2 miles of concrete pipe siphons (Gobernador, 8.9, and Largo) and 2.7 miles of concrete Main Canal was awarded to the Universal Constructors, Inc., Albuquerque, New Mexico, on December 23, 1966. The contract is about 16 percent complete. A contract for modification of the Navajo Dam outlet works and spillway was awarded to Industrial Builders, Inc., Fargo, North Dakota, on August 18, and on September 30, 1967 was about four percent completed . c. San Juan-Chama Project The San Juan-Chama Project is located in south central Colorado and north central New Mexico in the San Juan River, Rio Grande and Canadian River Basins. It was authorized along with the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project for construction in the Congressional Act of June 13, 1962. This project will divert waters from the headwaters of the San Juan River into the Rio Grande Basin for the purpose of providing supplemental water for existing irrigation projects and for municipal and industrial uses in the Albuquerque, New Mexico metropolitan area. Although water for the diversion will be collected from tributaries of the San Juan River in both Colorado and New Mexico, all water will be used in New Mexico in the Rio Grande Basin. By exchange, the project will also increase the use of water in New Mexico in the Canadian River Basin. It is planned to provide an initial diversion of 110,000 acre-feet of Colorado River Basin water per year. This project will also improve conditions for recreation, fish and wildlife in the Rio Grande Basin. Construction Activities On September 30, 1967, the contract for construction of Azotea Tunnel and appurtenant structures was about 69 percent complete. The contract for construction of Blanco Tunnel, Diversion Dam, and appurtenant structures was about 70 percent complete. The contract 116 |
