Show constructing the 4-mile-long, 10-foot-diameter Water Hollow Tunnel and one mile of outlet channel leading from the tunnel to Strawberry Reservoir. This facility will be the primary link between the other facilities comprising Strawberry aqueduct and Strawberry Reservoir. Bids are also to be taken during October, 1967, for improving approximately 9.7 miles of Currant Creek road and constructing 4.9 miles of access road from the latter road to the inlet of Water Hollow Tunnel. Construction was completed during September on field office and laboratory facilities near Strawberry Reservoir. The latter will serve as the field station from which construction activities for Water Hollow Tunnel and Strawberry Reservoir enlargement will be supervised. Preconstruction activities are also continuing for other facilities comprising the high mountain collection works that will convey water into the enlarged Strawberry Reservoir. ii. Vernal Unit The Vernal Unit, near Vernal, Utah, was the first unit of the initial phase of the Central Utah Project to be constructed. Project features include Steinaker Reservoir, offstream from Ashley Creek with a capacity of 38,200 acre-feet; Fort Thornburgh Diversion Dam; Steinaker Feeder Canal; and Steinaker Service Canal. Construction started in 1959 and was completed by 1962. The Vernal Unit, through storage of waters diverted from Ashley Creek, assures farmers an adequate, year-round supply of water, augments municipal water supply for three communities in Ashley Valley - Vernal, Maeser, and Naples; and provides recreation and fishing at Steinaker Reservoir. Operation and maintenance responsibility was transferred to the Uintah Water Conservancy District on January 1, 1967. Several minor construction deficiencies, previously noted, are scheduled for correction during fiscal year 1968. Present plans also provide for the Bureau of Reclamation to construct a pilot drain during the coming year. Other drainage work will be performed as need for it becomes apparent. iii. Upalco Unit Feasibility design and cost estimates have been completed for all project features of the Upalco Unit. The definite plan report and appendices are scheduled for completion by June 30, 1968. The plan of development for the Upalco Unit as now proposed will develop waters of Lake Fork and Yellowstone Rivers for irrigation, recreation, fish and wildlife, and flood control. Storage regulation will be provided at Taskeech Reservoir on Lake Fork below Moon Lake Reservoir. Total capacity of Taskeech Reservoir would be 78,- 121 |
