Show Report of the Regional Director topographic disadvantage is the noncontiguousness of the arable tracts. The greater part of the lands has good natural drainage. Some small areas, however, would require drainage construction to protect the land from waterlogging. The Soil Conservation Service is active in the project area and is constructing drainage outlets for two presently waterlogged areaso Considerable drainage construction work has already been completed. Present Development 17, Major land use in the general area is primarily grazing of livestock with a small amount of dry land wheat farming in the higher areas, and irrigation farming where water is available. In the project area practically all farming is dependent upon irrigation. Although the number of ran^e livestock in the general area has been declining for a number of years, due largely to reduced carrying capacity of the ran^e, livestock production remains the most important agricultural enterprise in V,rashington County. It is also a major enterprise in the project area and r.ore irrigated acreage is devoted to the production of feed crops than any other type of crops. Other important crops of the project area are small grains, fruits, vegetables and sugar beet seed. Gardens arc also important to the economy of the area. There are 9,035 acres of irrigated land in the projjet aroa upon which, with double cropping, 10^755 acres of crops are grown. Of the acreage of crops, about tv/c-thirds is used for food and forage, 29 percent is used for fruit, truck and other vegetable crops, and h percent is idle or fallow,, 18, Practically all of the irrigated lands are furnished water by incorporated nonprofit canal companies of which there are ten major companies in the area. The water rights and title to the irrigation works are held by these companies, which in turn are cv/ned and managed by the water users through stock ownership. Existing works consist of diversion dams across the Virgin and Santa Clara Rivers, and canals and distribution systems. The main diversion structures are constructed of concrete or rubble masonry and rest on stable foundations, Storage reservoirs have not been constructed on either river. Ono small off-stream reservoir, of about £00 acre-feet capacity, has been constructed on Ivins Bench in the Santa Clara Division, 19, Thcro is one hydroelectric poworplant en the Virgin River within the project area, and three or: the Santa Clara River outside the project area, above the Lower Gunlock Reservoir,, all of which arc owned by the Southern Utah Fewer Company, The LaVorkin Plant, which is located on the Virgin River nocv LaVorkin, Utah has an installed capacity of 1,000 kilowatts. The water supply is diverted from tho Virgin River at tho |
