BL: No she married a fellow that had cows, cattle ... she had come here as a teacher and then she married this man, but she married when she was older, and she had a family, too. But why, and then she used to preach a lot. The Madrid kids were here then, and she used to preach to them. She'd tell the whole class, you know, like "Well, if you're going to be a sheep herder, you'd better be the best there is," you know, as if that's all they knew what to do, or all they could do. And he really, from there on he really didn't get too much, he really had a bad attitude towards school. GC: How old was she at this time? BL: She was an older woman. Gosh, she taught Rosalie; she was old. GC: When your brother was in the third grade, about what year was that, do you remember? BL: In the third grade? Well, he was born in '25 ... RR: They started school about the time that Matilda died. BL: Yeah, in 1930, '31. . . would have been about 1933, around there, something like that. GC: '33, '34. Okay, the Madrid family, when did you first meet them? |
