Show INTERVIEW: Ellis Page 21 were I'd say t nor fifteen Mexican kids that graduated that year that I did, and that was a lot for Monticello. EN: Would you happen to know how they're doing now? VE: I sure don't. But from what I gather, like our generation, I don't know if it's just prejudiced or what, but from our generation we fought for what we wanted, I mean, like my brother got kicked off the team one time just for G.D. principles, you know, he was ornery as hell, but he messed off just like everybody else and they caught him and they kicked him off the team. Well, we took petitions, and the kids that liked my brother, even the white kids, we petitioned this teacher out, and so they had to let Ronny in with no pressures, and let him play the basketball game, you know, he was good enough to where it hurt our team to get him off just because he was Mexican, but you know, like that. But like from what I understand now, the cops in Monticello are really bad with Mexican people. And when I was in school, they didn't know what, because Dad ran the Out West, and they got to use the Out West at night to do what they want to with, you know, letting the best people in and things like this, so we never had any problems, I mean, they used to go out and get drunk with them and everything like this, but I guess now they're really rough on the |
