OCR Text 717 The difficulty in whirlpools is that the water will start whirling the boat and by the time it is checked, will catch and whirl it the other way, making it quite an effort to get out. He did not encounter any rapids in Glen Canyon, but only what he called riffles. R. 1718. " Q. What do you call a rapid, and what do you call a riffle? " A. A riffle, I would call it water that is not very swift, that is going over a shallow place, and a rapid was a place where the water was very swift and the river has quite a drop there, and full of large boulders." R. 1718. " BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: " Q Were you taking these moving pictures through there? " A. Yes sir. " Q. And all the way down this trip? " A. All the way down, yes sir. " BY MR. BLACKMAR: " Q. Did you stop at this place called Hite, Utah? " A. Yes sir, we camped there one night. " Q. Did you meet any people in there? " A. No sir. " Q. Did you meet any people at all from Greenriver down? " A. We met some Indians at what they call Hole- in- the- Wall on the Colorado river; there were some Indians there that had just crossed, going out. " Q. Are those all the people that you met in that whole trip? " A. Yes sir." R. 1719.
