What was your particular connection with the party? " A. I was one of the boatmen of the party. " Q. What equipment did you have in the way of boats? " A. We had six boats, what they call the Colorado river type boats. " Four of them eighteen- foot over all, about five foot beam, about twenty- four inches freeboard; they were covered over water- tight, forward and aft, with and open pit in the center for the oarsman. " There was two of them sixteen- foot type boat; four of them were eighteen- foot type. " Q. All of the boats, as I understand it, has those covered hatches, do you call them? " A. The hatch is the opening; it is decked over and covered so it is water- tight, them your hatch is the opening to get in the compartment, the same as a door, you know; it is battined down so it is water- light, covered. " Q. About how many inches would the larger boat draw when loaded? " A. About six inches. |
