Show 631 " A. Oh, no; no, they couldn't do that." R. 1522 Major Powell left the expedition at Ducheene and went out to make arrangements for rations to meet us at the mouth of the Dirty Devil River. The party that he got to bring the rations in couldn't find the river and so the expedition took on extra supplies that come in overland from Manti, Utah, to Gunnison Crossing. These supplies come in by peck mile in charge of Major Powell himself, who came from Manti, Utah with two men from Kanab, named Fred and Lyman Hamblin. These two men had been utilized by Major Powell on other occasions for transporting supplies and they had absolutely no knowledge of the regions nor did they own any boats. R. 1523. " Q. Did one of these Hamblins Moke a short trip with you? " A. yes, he got on the boat. They camped a little below where we met Powell; Powell came up on the west side of the river two or three miles from where he had camped to where we had camped, and one of the Hambline came with him, and we took him on the boat to take him down to their camp. and there were some riffles in between; he was quite startled at going through this terrible water." R. 1524. He then described the character of the Green River between Gunnison Crossing [ Greenriver, Utah] and the mouth of the San Rafael River as he saw it in 1871. He stated that there are no rapids in that region - just swift water with riffles - that they might be called rapids elsewhere but in comparison with the rapids which he had seen above that they didn't amount to much in this particular |
