Show 663 yards wide. These signs of Indian habitation were accessible from the river. R. 1593. In Stillwater Canyon, they found quite a well preserved ruin that had evidently been an Indian lookout, and back of this there was a little bottom land, then a trail lending up the high cliffs, about twelve hundred feet high. R. 1594. Recross Examination: ( R. Vol. 9 pp. 1594- 1595.) " BY MR. FARSNSWORTH: " Q. Did you find these Indian ruins at other points in the canyon than those where the bottom lands were present? " A. Oh, you will find those everywhere in the canyon; even in the Grand canyon you will find them, where there is no bottom land; they second to build these granaries in the holes in the cliff in order to store their things. " Q. Did you find there in portions of the canyon where, so fax as you observed, there were no evidences of trails up to the rim? " A. I think not, but of course, a good many places where they went out they cut hand- holds and footholds in the cliffs; those are washed away; you can't tell where they got out. |
