Show 650 Manly started with an old ferry boat and " it is phenomenal that they really got through; there were two other fellows with him, I think". R. 1563. ( Objection R. 1563. Testimony ordered stricken out. R. 1564). About 1850 Captain Gunnison was conducting an exploring expedition for the Government and arrived at Green River and crossed at what has since been called Gunnison Crossing [ Greenriver, Utah]. Gunnison Crossing was the great Indian highway. All trails converged with that place because they couldn't cross the river farther down, except at the Crossing of the Fathers. About 1825 Governor Ashley of Missouri operated in that particular neighborhood. He was a very competent man, and conducted very successful fur trading operations. His expedition met with great success because he was so cautious and provided against contingencies. R. 1564- 1565. They camped in the Green River Valley, which was a great rendezvous for trappers in 1825, and Ashley conceived the idea of going down the Green River, starting at the lower end of Green River Valley just before it closes in at Flaming Gorge, building boats and going down as far as Uintah Valley. During the second Powell Expedition they found wreckage in the canyon of Lodore which Major Powell attributed to Ashley's Party or to one preceding it, which party preceded Manley. Major Powell found the name of this party. They had wrecked their boats and tacked their names on a tree. He copies these names and put them in his diary, but the diary was burned up. R. 1565. |
