Show 680 the river at the mouth of Cooper Canyon where you can go right along by it. He has been there a number of times. Above this point for several miles, the river is canyoned up and comes out at Clay Hill Crossing. It again closes up and doesn't open up until you get to Goodrich close to Narrow Canyon. R. 1633. By taking detours around the head of the canyons he could get fairly close to the San Juan River, and where he would strike river would be about seventy- five to one- hundred above the cliff. He could get down to the river at Nokai by going afoot, and at John's Camp below you can drive down to the banks of the river with a team. R. 1633- 1634. He has been at these points twenty- five or thirty times, but his only actual contact with the river itself was in making the crossing back and forth. R. 1634. He saw the Turner boat at the Adam's cabin where Turner was then living, located at the mouth of Red Canyon about eight miles below White Canyon on the Colorado River. R. 1635. Turner had a ranch at this point. He didn't take any trips on the river with Turner except to take his stock across. At the time he was at the Turner ranch he was accompanied by Ernest Smith and had two saddle horses and two pack animals. R. 1636. They rode in the boat across the Colorado River, lead their saddle horses back of their boat and the mules followed behind the saddle stock. The |
