Show 641 Two prospectors were seen at the Crossing of the Fathers and no one else was seen between that point and Less Ferry, Arizona. R. 1544- 1545. After leaving Lees Ferry, Arizona, some of them stayed at Houserock Springs about four weeks. This place is simply a spring that had been discovered some years before and was called Houserock because a couple of fellows had slept under some rocks there and marked it " Rock House Hotel." They camped there and waited for Powell to come from Salt Lake and plan the winter's work. They arrived in Kanab about the first of November, 1871. During the remainder of that winter, they went out around the surrounding country at what they called Mt. Trumble and over on the Kaibab and all around estab-lishing geodetic points and running base lines and tri-angulating from the base line to establish a base triangu-lation for use in laying out the maps, recorded a lot of topography, putting in trails and things of that sort. They used pack trains for doing this work and were busy the whole winter. At the conclusion of the winter, they returned again to the Colorado River. The first time was when they tried to find the mouth of the Dirty Devil River across country. That was a very difficult operation. They finally reached there and he brought down a boat that had been left behind the year before. R. 1545- 1546. Upon reaching the mouth of the Dirty Devil River, they went northeasterly up through the place now called Clarkston, crossing the head of the Paria River, and went up along |
