In fact, we never could get an Indian to go down with us into a canyon. Q What, if any, history or Indian legend is there in connection with that fear, or that has any bearing on it? A They hear the rocks rolling down there, and they say it is the Great Spirit. That is their idea. MR. BLACKMAR: Ask him what he means by rocks rolling. BY MR. FARNSWORTH: Q What do you mean by hearing the rocks rolling and the roar of the waters? A The waters, only in high water, the roar of the water sides of the canyon, and rolling down towards the bottom, and these make a very loud, rumbling sound, many times, if they are large rocks. The Indians seem to attribute that to something else besides rocks rolling. Q They think there is a supernatural element there? A Yes. They think there is something supernatural operating there. |
