Show 5458 Mendenhall- D 3468 the river. THE SPECIAL MASTER: I understand him to say there were three boats went down, and he picked the fourth up at Nokai. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q Was that it? A Yes sir. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Did you start with three or four boats? A We started from our camp with three, picking up the other boat, the scow, and we worked our way down. It was quite hard at first, with a pretty heavy outfit, getting through the canyon, because it is full of rapids and very swift water, we had to be careful. We always could determine in every serious rapid by the sound ahead of us. Sometime for a mile we could hear a rapid below us, and would always land and examine the rapid be-fore going through, and then arrange our equipment so we could get through the most readily. Q About how many rapids would you say you had to run or had to line? |
