Show 5502 Mendenhall- 3512 where there are riffles or rapids? Or do they occur in quiet portions of the river? A They are in the main current of the river, that is where the principal waves form, whenever there is considerable current these sand waves will develop. Q What I mean is, do they accompany what you call a riffle or rapid, or are they in portions of the river which at other times of the year would be quiet water? A They are in where the quiet water would be. The Q So that in the portion of the year when these sand waves do not occur, the water at that spot would be compara-tively quiet? A Yes sir, more or less quiet. Q Have you navigated the river through these sand waves, or when sand waves were in existence? A Oh, yes. Q How do you do that? A We generally work to get along the outside edge of the waves, where the water would, be some shallower, but there is not that action to bother with the rising and falling of the waves. |
