Show Women's and Children's Health Births to Adolescents Compiled by Jona Nusink Curry and Kelli Olson 2001 Utah Adolescent Birthrate: Age 15-17: 19 per 1.000 Age 18-19: 60 per 1.000 Adolescent women giving birth adolescent men fathering children is a public health concern for a number of reasons. Teenage mothers and their infants are more likely than older mothers to suffer adverse health effects during and after the pregnancy. Pregnant Adolescents often neglect to seek prenatal care, which can lead to physical and emotional problems for the mother, and premature birth and/or low birth weight for the baby. Other negative outcomes include single parenting, poverty, involvement in crime, substance abuse, and a cycle of teen parenthood. Since 1984, Utah's teen birthrates have been slightly lower than those of the United States (Table 1) Although adolescent birthrates are declining in the state and the country, both rates are high compared to teen birthrates in other developed nations (Tables 2). The birth rate of teenage fathers has decreased since 1994 (Table 3). The adolescent birthrate does not include miscarriages and abortions, and is an underestimate of the adolescent pregnancy rate. Utahns Concerned About Adolescent Pregnancy and Parenting (UCAPP) is a coalition working to reduce the incidence of teen pregnancy and the associated health and social problems. Table 2.
