Show Chronic Diseases Prostate Cancer (ICD 9 Codes: 185.0-185.9; ICD-10 Code: C61) Compiled by Michael J. Walker 2001 Utah Prostate Cancer Deaths: 181 Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. Prostate cancer is among the most frequently diagnosed form of cancer in males. The recent declining trend in mortality rates in Utah and the U.S. is, therefore, highly encouraging. From its peak of 14.3 in 1992, the national prostate cancer mortality rate decreased almost 21% to 11.3 in 2000 (Table 1). Since 1990, Utah's prostate cancer mortality rates have been on a general decline as well. After a substantial decrease between 1995 (16.9) and a low of 11.1 in 2000, in 2001 Utah experienced a slight rate increase to 12.0 (Figure 1). In order to overcome this increase, heightened awareness of risk factors and regular cancer screenings are essential. African American men, males over fifty, and those with a family history of prostate cancer should pay particular attention to early warning signs, which include difficulty urinating, painful urination or ejaculation, and blood in the urine or seamen. Although prostate cancer accounts for the second highest number of cancer deaths in males, it is one of the most readily treated. Table 1.
