Show Infectious Diseases Gonorrhea (ICD-9=,98 ICD-10=A54) Compiled by Adrianna C. Olnhausen and Jennifer Ha 2002 Gonorrhea Cases: 334 Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Women infected with the disease will develop symptoms such as vaginal discharge, dysuria, and inter-menstrual uterine bleeding. Some men may experience penile discharge or painful urination, while others may display no symptoms at all. If left untreated, gonorrhea can lead to serious problems such as prostatitis (men), pelvic inflammatory disease (women), and infertility or ectopic pregnancy (life-threatening condition). From 1975 to 1997, there was a 73.9% decrease in the rate of Gonorrhea throughout the United States. However, and 8% rate increase occurred between 1997 and 2001. This shift can be attributed to increased screening, better diagnostic testing, and improved reporting (Table 1 & 2). There are an estimated 800,000 new cases of gonorrhea in the United States per year. The U.S. rate remains the highest of any industrialized country and is roughly 50 times that of Sweden and 8 times that of Canada. In 2001 it was 15 times that of the Utah rate (Figure 1). The estimated annual cost of the disease and its ramifications is approximately $1.1 billion per year in the United States. - Table 1. Gonorrhea Incidence , Utah and U.S., 1990-2000.
