Show Chronic Diseases Female Breast Cancer (ICD-9 Code: 174; ICD-10 Code: C50) Compiled by: Jennifer Sargent, Brooke DeWaal, Laurie Hoffman 2002 Utah Breast Cancer Mortality Rates: 25 per 100,000 In the U.S., breast cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer among women, and it is the leading cause of cancer deaths among Utah women. Between 1998 and 1999, Utah experienced a decline in breast cancer deaths, dropping from 27.6 to 22.3 deaths per 100,000 women, but the state mortality rate has since risen to 24.5 in 2002 (Table 1, Figure 1). Despite this increase, Utah's death rate from breast cancer is approximately 15% lower than that of the nation (Table 1), and is the third lowest in the U.S. Utah has become more proactive in the fight against breast cancer. Clinical trials have demonstrated that routine screening with mammography can reduce breast cancer deaths by 20 to 30 percent in women aged 50 to 69, and by about 17% in women aged 40 to 49 years. Accordingly, the 2000 Utah state legislature approved a resolution encouraging private health insurance companies and employers to include insurance coverage for the screening and detection of breast, colorectal, and prostate cancers. The Utah Cancer Control Program (UCCP) provides free or low cost clinical breast exams and mammograms to women who meet age and income guidelines, as well as education about the need for early detection and the availability of screening. The UCCP website can be found at www.utahcancer.org. Table 1.
