Show Behavioral Influences on Health Violent Crime Compiled by Matt Horstmann The Federal Bureau of Investigation reported virtually no change in the Crime index in 2000 compared to the 1999 figures. Final 2000 data released by the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program in the annual publication Crime in the United States, 2000, show that serious crime was 14.0 percent lower than in 1996 and 22.0 percent less than in 1991. Factors known to affect frequency and type of reported crime continue to include population size and density, number of law enforcement officers, ethnicity and age of population, and economic conditions. Figures show that crime rates have measurably decreased within the state of Utah from 1999 to 2000 (Table 1). In 2000, a total of 91,249 index crimes were committed which indicates a 11.40% decrease in overall crime from 1999. The violent crime rate decreased by 7.56% from the previous year, with decreases in homicide rate (2.33%) and the aggravated assault rate (13.93%). The rape rate (5.28%) and the robbery rate (4.29%) bom increased. Firearms were used in 45.24% of the homicides reported. The Property Crime rate decreased by 11.63%. There was a 7:05% decrease in the burglary rate in 2000. The larceny rate decreased by 11.75%. The value of property stolen amounted to $87,868,898. Of that amount, $25,960,151 was recovered, indicating a 29.5% recovery rate. Residential burglaries accounted for 59.31% of all burglaries. Of all residential burglaries, 45.18% were committed during daytime hours (6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.). Reported hate crimes increased from 61 in 1999 to 80 in 2000, a 31.15% increase. Table 1.
