Show Chronic Diseases Cerebrovascular Disease (ICD-9 Codes: 430-438; ICD-10 Codes: 160-169) Compiled by Kasey Poon 2000 Utah Stroke Deaths: 975 Cerebrovascular disease refers to a group of problems with the blood vessels in the brain that lead to stroke, otherwise known as a '"brain attack." There are two types of stroke: ischemic and hemorrhagic. An ischemic stroke is caused by a blockage of the blood vessels that supply the brain with blood. Hemorrhagic strokes result when cerebral blood vessels rupture, causing bleeding in the brain. Approximately seventy-five percent of strokes are ischemic. Stroke was the third leading cause of death in the United States in 2000. Only heart disease and cancer resulted in more deaths that year. Advances in diagnosis and treatment of ischemic stroke have helped to sharply reduce death rates due to this type of stroke. These declines, in turn, are responsible for the downward trend in overall mortality rates. The crude death rate from cerebrovascular disease in Utah has consistently and significantly remained below that of the U.S. (Figure 1 Table 1). In fact, Utah is behind only Alaska and New York for having the lowest mortality rate from stroke. This may be a reflection of the relatively younger age of the population of Utah compared to the rest of the United States as well as other factors. Some major risk factors for stroke include hypertension, diabetes, elevated hemoglobin levels, and heart disease. Other risk factors are age, gender, race, family history, cigarette smoking, obesity, elevated cholesterol, alcohol abuse, oral contraceptive use, history of transient ischemic attacks, and physical inactivity.
