Show Chronic Diseases Lung Cancer (ICD-9Code: 160-165; ICD 10: C34) Compiled by Michael Walker, Phil Graves, Stephanie Anderson, and Brad Hopkin 2001 Utah Lung Cancer Deaths: 367 Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Utah and the U.S., and lung cancer is the second most deadly cancer. Nationally, and in the state, mortality rates from lung cancer fluctuated only slightly between 1985 and 2000 (Table 1). hi Utah, this form of cancer killed 23.1 people per 100,000 population in 2001 (Figure 1). While this is well below the national rate of 60.1, lung cancer still is a serious problem for Utah's men, who are about twice as likely as the state's women to die from lung cancer (Figure 2). Concern about this potentially fatal cancer has led to research investigating causes, as well as treatments. Research has shown that the effects of tobacco are linked to the prevalence of this type of cancer. Tobacco increases the risk of lung cancer, whether used in cigarettes, pipes, cigars, or inhaled through second hand smoke. The low prevalence of adult smokers in Utah may help explain the state's comparatively favorable mortality rate. Environmental agents such as radon also increase risk for developing lung cancer.
