Though most measures indicate Utah is a healthy state, due to Utah's diverse geography and population, the aggregate state numbers do not always give an accurate picture of health in different parts of Utah. Accordingly, we have added a new section, which examines health data at the health district level. The topics included in this section were chosen based on the ten leading health indicators for the U.S. Public Health Service's Healthy People 2010 (HP 2010), as well as the Utah Department of Health's community health indicators. Below is a general overview of the ten leading indicators, and the objectives represented in Table 1. The following twelve pages more comprehensively examine five of the health indicators in each local health district. Physical Activity: Increase the proportion of adults who engage regularly, preferably daily, in moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes per day (HP 2010 22-2). Overweight and Obesity: Reduce the proportion of adults who are obese (Body Mass Index (BMt) >30) or overweight (BMI >25) (HP 2010 19-2). Tobacco Use: Reduce cigarette smoking by adults (HP 2010 27-la). Substance Abuse: Reduce the proportion of adults engaging in binge drinking of alcoholic beverages during the past month (HP 2010 26-1 lc). Responsible Sexual Behavior (Reproductive Health): Reduce the rate low birth weight infant births (<2500 grams, approximately 5 lbs. 8 ounces) (HP 2010 16-10). Mental Health: Reduce population suicide rates (HP 2010 18-1). Injury and Violence: Reduce deaths caused by motor vehicle crashes (HP 2010 15-15a). Environmental Quality: Reduce the proportion of children (<17 years age) who are regularly exposed to tobacco smoke at home (HP 2010 27-9). Immunizations: Increase the proportion of young children (19 to 35 months) who receive all vaccines that have been recommended for universal administration (HP 2010 14-24). Access to Care: Increase the proportion of persons with health insurance (HP 2010 1-1).
