Show Chronic Diseases Organ Transplantation Compiled by Paul Peterson Organ transplantation within the United States is organized through the Organ Transplantation and Procurement Network (OTPN). This organization tracks data relevant to transplantation within the U.S. from 254 participating transplant centers throughout the country. Examples of these data include the current number of individuals waiting for transplants and. since 1988, the number of organ transplants performed annually. Utah has four transplant centers. They are LDS Hospital, Primary Children's Medical Center, University of Utah Medical Center and the Veteran's Administration Hospital. There are 11 regions nationally. Utah is in region 5, which also includes California, Nevada, New Mexico and Arizona, and Hawaii. Organs are now distributed widely, though this is limited by ischemic organ viability. Between 1988 and 2002, the number of liver transplants done annually increased quite dramatically in the state and the Region, going from 12 in 1988 to 56 in 2002 in Utah and from 227 to 838 in Region 5 (Table 1). Since the early 1990s, the number of heart transplant surgeries performed annually has decreased in both Region 5 and Utah (Figure 3 & 4). According to the LDS Hospital Heart Transplant Department, this is due to more stringent compatibility testing, which insures greater transplant viability. During the same time period, the number of single lung transplants in the Region increased from 32 surgeries in 1990 to 156 in 2001 (Table 2). Kidney transplants in Utah and Region 5 have steadily increased (Figures 1 & 2). To become a registered organ donor, please go to http:// www.yesutah.org/. Table 1.
