Show Chronic Diseases Diabetes Meilitus (ICD-9 Codes: 250- 250.9; ICD-10 Codes: E10-E14) Compiled by Lisa Hyde, Juliana Preston, and Ara Serjoie 2001 Utah Diabetes Meilitus Deaths: 509 Diabetes meilitus (type 2), a chronic disease with no cure, is the sixth leading cause of death in Utah and the U.S. An estimated 16 million people in the U.S. and 120,000 people in Utah have diabetes, 30% of whom remain undiagnosed and untreated. Type 2 diabetes affects 90%-95% of people with diabetes and is linked to obesity and physical inactivity. Annually, medical and lost productivity costs due to diabetes are estimated to be greater than $100 billion. Mortality rates for diabetes meilitus have steadily increased in Utah and the U.S. (Figure 1). hi 1989, a "Death Subgroup" field was added to national and state death certificate procedures, which led to a significant rise in recorded diabetes deaths. Utah's Diabetes mortality rate was 32.3 per 100,000 population in 2001, a slight decrease from 34.4 in 2000. Since 1990, male mortality rates have been consistently higher than female rates in Utah and the U.S (Table 1). The Utah Diabetes Control Program is currently working on: 1) a statewide diabetes surveillance system, 2) a Utah certification of diabetes self management training program, 3) a diabetes primary care process improvement project, 4) insurance coverage and reimbursement for diabetes, 5) diabetes care through Medicaid and Managed Care Organizations, and 6) public awareness.
