Show Chronic Diseases Chronic Liver Disease and Cirrhosis (ICD-9 Codes: 571 ; ICD-10 : K70, K73-74) Compiled by Lisa Hyde 2001 Utah Liver Disease Deaths: 137 Chronic liver disease and cirrhosis are the twelfth leading causes of death in the U.S. Risk factors include chronic viral hepatitis, congenital and inherited diseases, and prolonged exposure to environmental toxins. The primary risk factor is excessive alcohol consumption. Since 1980, chronic liver disease mortality rates in the U.S. have been steadily declining. With one of the lowest rates in the country, Utah's mortality rate from chronic liver disease has been consistently lower than that of the U.S. (Table 1). Utah's lower rate of alcohol consumption may partly account for this. However, the Utah-U.S. mortality rate gap has narrowed since 1996: Utah's mortality rates have increased, while national rates have held steady (Figure 1). In Utah, death rates for males are higher than those for females and have not declined much in recent years. The likely explanation for this is a difference in alcohol consumption between males and females. During liver transplant surgery, a diseased liver is removed and replaced by a healthy liver from an organ donor. Though many people in Utah remain on waiting lists for liver transplants, liver availability is higher in Utah than in most other states. Table 1.
