Show I l9S EMIGRANT'S GUIDE. 1uected. The town is rapidly improving, and is now a place of great commercial wealth. Knoxville, the chief town of East Tennessee, stands upon the north side of Holston river, 35° 55' N. lat. 6° 58' W. l<m. from Wa$hington city. T here is not much differe nce in the population of Knox- · viJle and Nashville. T he latter is, in many respects, one of the most agreeable places of residence in_ the ,lfnited_ S tate~. The adj a~ent country is variegated and romantic. 1 he ch m ~te Is a due med 1urn between the extremes of the northern winters and southern summers. Occupying an interesting si tuation almost upon the cli rec.t rou t~ from New Orleans and Natchez to the middle states, Knoxville WJ II become a pl ace of grea t consequence, when go?d roads are made throu o-h the state of Mississ ippi and Alabama tern tory. Th 0 ere are many other town~ in the state of Tennessee, but none that merit parlicular notice. There are several colleges, academies, and schools in T ennessee. Cumberland colleo-e, in Nashv ille, is the most extensive Jiterary establishment in the~state. There are one or two colleges in East Tennessee. By law there ought to be one academy iu each count.y : how many of the latter are in operation, we are unable to st(lte With certainty. Education is not neglected in the state, though not pursued with the re~u l ari ty , or carried so high as in the nor~hcrn states. Professional men, particul arly physicians, are obl igeJ ,_ m ord r. to complete their studies, to attend lectures in ~ith e r B~lt1more, Phtla· delphia, ·New-York, or Boston. No estaL!Jsbment m th:. western tttates .is so imperiously necessary, as a college of physi cians and sturgeons. There is prov ision made in the arrangement of the '!ransylvan ian university in Lexington, Kentucky, for the ~omplet wn of medical education ; and it is much to be desired tl~ at tb1s pdrt of the plan was carried into complete effect. So much is now become necessary by the advancement of chemistry and botany in . or~er to complete medical studies, that much time and expense are J.AdJ s~en- 5able in the col1ection of libraries, and in the fo:rnation of the vanous professo r~ hips . In every point of view, Tennessee is a very respectable ~nd rapidly improving state. The Mississippi is its great commercial outJet. Two or more canals have been projected, to unite the waters of T ennessee with those of Mobile ri ve r. How far these canals ara practicable, or what wi ll be their probable expense, is unknown. One very serious objection to their utility, arises from the great length of time that the higher waters of Tombigbee and Coosa rivers are rendered innavigable, almost every year by the summer and autumn heats. The route to market by the Mississippi is circuitous a_nd tedious; but it is always open, and subject to no other particular Jn · convenience !han what ari ses from the length. . The following tables exhibi ts the relative distances from Nashville ~nd Knoxville, to the principal towns in the Unite Statei. EMIGRANT'S GUIDE. 199 No. 38. N h ·n to Wa!hington city by Knoxville.
