Show Behavioral Influences on Health Mental Health: Mortality and Suicide (ICD-9: 950-959: ICD 10: X60-X84,Y87.0) Compiled by Christian Anderson, Dennis Geertsen,, Craig Colton and Angela Smart Utah's death rates for suicide are consistently higher than national rates (Figure 1). The Utah:U.S. ratio in 2001 shows Utah's rate to be almost 1.3 times that of the nation (Table 1). The Intermountain West has the highest suicide rate in the nation. Utah is at the lower end of the range in this region, but Utah's rate is still a serious problem. There is a striking difference between suicide mortality rates for females and males (Figure 2). In 2001. 53 women in Utah committed suicide, while 263 men did. Historically, suicide is the leading cause of death for Utah's 25 to 44 year-old men, and the second leading cause of death for 15 to 24 year-old men. Suicide is higher among mental health clients than the general population. Standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) show a risk of death 1.6 to 2.9 times higher for mental health clients than for the rest of the population. A SMR is the ratio of actual deaths among clients, compared to expected number of deaths in the general population of each state, controlling for age and sex. The average number of years of life lost for mental health clients ranged from 25-32 years, based on life expectancy at time of death. Most mental health clients die of natural causes at younger ages than do other adults. Figure 1. Mortality per 100,000 Population from Suicide, Utah and U.S. 1981-2001. Table 1.
