Show Socioeconomic Indicators Persons Without Conventional Housing Compiled by Gretchen Ratzlaff Number o f Persons Using Unconventional Housing on March 27, 2000: 1,494 On March 27, 2000, a point in time approach to counting the number of persons seeking "unconventional housing," the US Census Bureau counted 1,494 persons using sheltered housing in Utah. According to the census report, 1,178 of those 1,494 were in shelters from Salt Lake City to Ogden. The total number of homeless has increased since 1990, particularly alarming is the increase in the number of homeless families and children (Tables 1 & 2). Table 3 shows the age and gender of the Utah population in comparison to the US total. The Utah Department of Community and Economic Development's State Community Services Office has several housing related programs offering assistance to homeless persons, persons with disabilities, and facilitates the creation and maintenance of affordable quality housing opportunities for people living with HTV/AIDS. There is also a subsidized and special needs housing database to help individuals and families identify the availability of different kinds of rental housing depending upon their specific needs. Additionally, there are numerous non-profit and private organizations that are instrumental in aiding the needy in Utah. Table 1. Number of Homeless by Category, Utah, 1990-1999.
