Ten- T 0 E M S. C 18. Bernieres I for whofe beloved fake M y thoughts are at a noble ftrife, This m y fantaftick Landskip take, Which I have copied from the Life. I only feek the Defarts rough, Where all alone I love to walk, And with difcourfe refin'd enough, M y Genius and the Mufes talk ; But the converfe moft truly mine, Is the dear memory of thine. ip. Thou .mayft in this Poem find, So full of liberty and heat, What illuftrious rays have fhin'd T o enlighten m y conceit: Sometimes penfive, fometimes gay, Juft as that fury does controul, And as the object I furvey, The notions grow up in m y Soul, And are as unconcern'd and free As the flame which tranfported me. 20. O ! how I Solitude adore, That Element of nobleft wit, Where I have learnt Apollo's lore^ Without the pains to ftudy it: For thy fake I in love a m grown With what thy fancy does purfiie', But when I think upon m y own, I hate it for that reafon too, Becaufe it needs muft hinder me From feeing, and from ferving thee. |
