Show U TO N I A NNineteen TwelveBasket Ball'Varsity GamesALTHOUGH B. Y. U. won the State championship, Utah has every right to feel proud of her team. Since basketball is her chief sport, the Provo* school should, perhaps, be expected to win. Our two and only defeats were at her hands. In the beginning, the "U" team was strong, defeating the local Y. M. C. A. and Fort Douglas team by large scores. In our first inter-collegiate game, however, we were disastrously defeated by B. Y. U. at Provo. The Provo- boys far outplayed the "U" team, both in speed and in throwing field goals. The game was markedly rough, and numerous fouls were called, chiefly against the "Y."Our second inter-collegiate game was with the Aggies at Logan, where our boys showed considerable improvement. Handicapped by a small floor, the score was only slightly in our favor-26-22.In the return game with A. C. at Salt Lake, the Aggies were decidedly outclassed, though they fought hard. Both teams were "up on their toes" all the time and the audience was kept in cont'nual suspense. Both were about equally matched, but the "Y" boys were the more fortunate and the more skillful at throwing field baskets. The score was close until early the second half, when B. Y. U. took a big lead. Towards the end of the game Utah rallied strong and for a few minutes played the "Y" men off their feet, but the lead was too big to be overcome. The final score was 33-26.The team as a whole was rather light compared with its opponents. "Lon" Romjney was shifted from forward, which he played last year, to' center, where he was a star man. Capt. Holmstead had a streak of bad luck in one of the games. The basket seemed to be a "Jonah" to' him. Jacob, a B. Y. U. man last year, played good consistent ball, but his lightness was a great disadvantage in most of the games. This year Erickson played his second season at guard. Fast and wily, he makes a star in this position. In the second B. Y. U. game "Erick" very nearly shut178 |
